  • Ralston gets patriotic, as usual, with the biggest 4th of July parade. ever. in the world. Honestly, I’m glad i chose to sleep in! However, I will surely catch hell when the boyfriend realizes we missed the Imperial Army marching through his hometown.
  • More and more upscale bars are moving into the Old Market area, offering something different for those who have let their frat-boy days far behind but still like to meet friends for a few drinks.
  • I’ll be taking a few days off, back on Wednesday after a nice little vacation. I’ll possibly get a few things posted to go live while I’m gone, but I make no promises. In any case, have a great weekend and I’ll catch everyone next week!

coal car accident just above 84th street!

    Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Driving home today from a family 4th of July barbecue, we came across an amazing site.

    coal accident

A train headed east over 84th Street had some sort of accident, and four of the cars had dumped all or part of their coal loads out onto the surrounding grass. One local train enthusiast stopped in a parking lot told us that each of those cars carries 100,000 pounds of coal. Each one. So there’s somewhere between three and four hundred thousand pounds of coal dumped out in the area now.

We didn’t stay long enough to see how they’d go about cleaning it all up, but I got some great photos of the whole ordeal. I’ve included them after the jump for those who are interested.

  • A petition has been started to revamp Rosenblatt rather than build a new ball park. Moving the ballpark could be devastating to the neighborhoods surrounding it, some are saying, and are even calling Rosenblatt this city’s Wrigley Field. I for one am all for keeping Rosenblatt where it’s at, but to move it would allow the zoo room to expand, which it desperately needs. And does downtown really need one more thing added to it that will take up land space?!?! I fear I’m in the minority here, however.
  • The fireworks police are out and about, setting up checkpoints to confiscate illegal fireworks coming in from across the Nebraska border. So then how did all my neighbors get the artillery shells in they were lighting off at 2am last night?!?!
  • Paul Simon will take the stage with Democratic candidate Chris Dodd in Council Bluffs this Saturday! Head on out to Narrows River Park at 1:30pm that day to hear the speech and see Simon sing.

  • With the CWS fast approaching, parking becomes a nightmare down by the stadium and the zoo.
