The Ranch Bowl Legacy Is Over

Monday, August 27th, 2007

ranch-bowl-1.jpg

The Ranch Bowl … an Omaha staple. People of all ages remember seeing such bands as The Red Hot Chili Peppers and 311 play. Volleyball in the summer and bowling all winter long, as well as the pool hall Snookers were also staples of this amazing music venue. And then the 21st century hit, and the bands got shittier and the crowds got smaller. And the Ranch Bowl Closed it’s doors.

State-wide test scores are coming in, and students are scoring better than ever with writing. As many as nine-tenths of students are now reaching state-set goals for writing progress. How did the Omaha-area schools fare?

Storm Wipes Out Power, Trees, Even A Few Porches!

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

storm

Last night huge storms ripped through Nebraska and Iowa, from Lincoln to Council Bluffs and beyond. With winds up to 80 mph in some areas, tree limbs were knocked down, houses were left without power, and my friend even lost her porch!

damage

To add to the fun, weather conditions are right for the same dramatic events to take place tonite AND tomorrow! So be prepared, because last night there was 1″ hail and a tornado touched down near Richland, NE. Hopefully it won’t be as bad tonite, but if you had planned to be out and about, the 50% chance of severe weather might make you think twice!

  • Stan Tribble was given life in prison for killing his wife! The day before his wife disappeared they had an argument, directly leading to her death. He’s got no chance of parole, but can appeal the sentence.
  • If you’re heading to UNO this fall for classes, have fun trying to find parking! The construction is severly limiting the number of places to park. Good thing you can park on the south campus and at Crossroads!

  • Lack of permanent housing and mostly private funding are FINALLY identified by the city as issues the homeless have to deal with. Does that mean anything will actually be done? Probably not. But at least they’re pretending to care now.
  • Reading scores are up across the city, hopefully closing the gap between those who meet Bush’s ridiculous “No Child Left Behind Standards” and those lucky schools who are still in danger of losing funding. YAY!
  • While the Omaha Ballet is already rehearsing for the Nutcracker, the cast is finally complete. Am I the only one who’s already super excited for this ballet?!?!

Ganz weighs in on quarterback debate

    Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

    joe ganz

With only a few short weeks until the Huskers kickoff their first game of the season, competition runs stiff between Joe Ganz and Sam Keller for the starting quarterback spot. Not news for most of the state.

What is new, sort of, is Ganz belief that he is still in the running for that starting spot.

Despite Ganz having been in the program longer and Keller’s bucking of the system last year while redshirted, many fans believe that they’ll see Keller on the field during Nebraska’s first possessions of the ‘07-’08 season. Ganz is hopeful he will take the spot, citing his time with the team and his proven record as reasons the coaches will pick him.

I have no clue who should start, but I do know I love that pic!

    July is a shooting-friendly month

    Monday, August 6th, 2007

    christopher vaughn

The official tallies are in, and more than one person a day was shot this past July in Omaha. If you only count the people that were injured or killed, it makes for 31, or one a day. But if you include those who weren’t actually hit, just shot at, the number jumps much higher. And with most of those shootings happening in Northeast Omaha, residents are starting to own weapons for self-defense and the police are going to station more units, especially their gang-violence units, in the high target areas.

Maybe we should re-think letting people carry concealed weapons?!?!?!

    downtown

  • The city has purchased two warehouses that sit between the developing NoDo area and the Old Market. Both still have operating businesses, but the city will most likely tear them down in an effort to unify these burgeoning middle class areas.
  • Speaking of land in Omaha, the Skyline Woods Golf Course is making news again, as its owner is refusing to listen to the requirement that the land be maintained as either a golf course or an attractive lawn. Broekemeier claims he can’t afford to maintain it as such. He purchased the property out of bankrupcy in 2005, and is realizing why the property was there in the first place!
  • Bellevue fire kills three, families devastated

    Thursday, July 26th, 2007

    bellevue fire

Yesterday at 10am firefighters and rescue squads were sent to a Bellevue home engulfed in flame. Three young girls, ages 16, 2, and 11 months lost their lives in the fire, reportedly started when one of the other children (a 7 year-old) played with a lighter on a mattress upstairs.

The teenager, babysitting the other two girls, attempted to get them to safety, but was unable. An airman tried to rescue them but also failed, as did police and firefighters.

Four other children in the house all made it out, and Alma went back in for the two remaining little girls. That’s when tragedy struck this family.

Our thoughts are with the families and the surviving children as they cope with their loss.

in the paper today - the alcohol addition

Due to yesterday’s amazing Lohan-focused drama, today is all about the alcohol!

  • Nebraska is beginning to test out the whole ankle bracelet as alcohol monitoring system on 150 people currently on parole for alcohol-related issues. They claim the devices are almost 100% foolproof. Maybe they should reevaluate those numbers using the Lohan scale of abuse?!
  • Downtown residents are un an uproar, and urging the owners of the Downtown Food Mart to stop selling single cans of beer, as the area is apparently overrun with homeless people sitting around drinking and littering. With the push to make downtown yuppie heaven, I can see where this could become an issue. No word yet on how many of these beers will be sold to SCRAM-wearers.

  • Creighton Prep taking a stand against sweatshop-made clothing by deeming all of their athletic equipment sweatshop-free. Now, can they move that to their school uniforms?

  • Creighton’s newest campus addition is being dubbed a “four story recruiting tool” … great, because what a school needs isn’t more classrooms or dorms, but a ballroom and a bar!
  • Have a great weekend, and enjoy the new Harry Potter book.

    the beat the heat edition

    Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

With temperatures still on the rise in Omaha, much of the daily news seems to focus on keeping cool while keeping safe. From articles about fencing off your pool to the Salvation Army’s free fans, we can’t seem to get the temps out of our heads. If you don’t have central air (like me) now is the time to break down and turn on every window unit you’ve got, and be sure your pets have plenty of water and shade.

(note to my neighbors … PLEASE don’t leave your dog outside all day today, or i WILL have to call the Humane Society on you. it’s too hot outside for him)

One way to beat the heat? Head to the Guitar Hero tournament tonite at the Waiting Room Lounge in Bensen.

  • Further proof that we really CAN be best at something, Nebraska edged out Michigan for highest gas prices in the nation. I’m so proud.
  • The Luis Palau festival hits the Qwest Center, bringing with it BMX riders, skateboarders, music, and evangelism. The mid-90’s Christian music lover in me is sort of sad I missed Toby Mac.
  • Not much else in the news today. I’ll be back with more excitement tomorrow.

  • With the new immigration issues causing even legal immigrants to panic at the potential for deportation, naturalization filings have been skyrocketing. In Nebraska and Iowa, those numbers are up 80 percent.
  • Apparently some judges agree that words like “rape” and “assault” are prejudicial terms when used in a RAPE CASE. Yesterday in a trial in Lincoln a woman was required to cease the use of these two words during a rape case because the defendant’s lawyers thought the words would sway the jury. Nice. Way to go Nebraska, staying at the forefront of women’s issues.
  • 15 more arrests were made Tuesday night in a prostitution sting. All appear to have been “johns” as the arrests were made for solicitation and lewd conduct. Wonder if they’ll put up another billboard with photos on it?
