Colbert takes on Nelson

nelson's new hair

For Fashionable Omaha Wednesday, I find great pleasure in bringing this to your attention.

Monday night Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson appeared on the Colbert Report on Comedy Central, with questions centering around the 18 benchmarks Congress is using to evaluate the Iraq war, and which Nelson helped to author.

However, the true greatness of the show (and of the focus of this article in the local paper), was in the new hairdo the Senator is sporting. Apparently not one to be outdone by the cosmetic changes most females undergo on a regular basis, Nelson dyed his grey hair auburn!

Claiming his new barber suggested a rinse, and that he didn’t know what he was getting into, Nelson’s new barber and his new hair color probably won’t last long. I guess he didn’t think people would notice? There’s nothing wrong with dying your hair, Ben. Wear the new brown locks proudly!

As for the Colbert Report, the papers are reporting Nelson held his own, but I seriously doubt that’s the case. No one can when faced with Colbert.

Today I bring you two pictures of some casual wear I’ve seen running all over Omaha lately.

mike

The casual look around Omaha has stepped up a notch, with button-downs moving from a work-only wardrobe choice. I’ve seen guys of all ages walking around the Old Market lately in just such an outfit, sleeves rolled up and sandals on while still looking dressy enough to enter just about any restaurant or other establishment without worry of missing on the dress code.

sandals

One of the keys to pulling of this dressed-down yet stylish look is in the details. Sandals are okay, but with the leather (or faux leather) straps, they are much dressier and can be worn casual or fancy. That’s what I love about not only what Mike is wearing, but about the look overall. Stylish indeed!

Fashionable Omaha

A day late, but still great shots of a couple of fashionable Omahans.

connie 1

First up is Connie, capturing the wonder that is summer in Omaha. Love her bright orange tank, and Lisa of The Icon had this to say: “Loving her longer pixie shape with lots of texture throughout with scattered honey blonde hilights to accentuate the layers!”

Here’s a closer look at those amazing layers! I must admit, I’ve rocked this sort of cut a time or two, and love how easy it is.

Also joining the ranks of the Fashionable Omaha group today is Chris. Personally, I love the thrifty-goodness of the shirt, the scuffed up boots, and the all-around look he’s pulling off.

The Icon ladies had this to say: “Gotta love the modern shaggy shape with lots of texture. The layers are arranged on his head shape so that it could fall exactly into place naturally.”

The perfect cut for every guy! Lets take a closer look at the detail in his shirt, just for me!

For our first “Fashionable Omaha” section, I thought it fitting to snap some pictures of a few of the Icon ladies, and get their thoughts on their style.

lisa and shauna

Shauna (at left) said this about her style: “My fashion inspirations are florals, vintage, tons of color in my clothing, and most of the time ends up being dresses.” Shauna knows how to bring girlie to any moment, and I love the pattern in her top here!

Lisa (at right) had this to say: “As a little girl, I was the one in torn up jeans and glitter in my hair. As an adult I haven’t strayed too far from that! I’m still a jeans/tee-shirt girl with lots of mascara and sparkles wherever possible.” For me, seeing her choose a tee with something on it to pair with a floral skirt opened wide a ton of new fashion possibilities.

One other thing to point out about these women? I love their hair. Both of them. I love how they rock different lengths (and both have had both lengths!) and different colors, reminding me any woman can have any hair color and length.

fashionable Omaha

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Omaha has long held its own in the fashion world, with its indie rock subculture and Saddle Creek Records fame. And with so many different types of fashion popular today, Omaha has much to choose from when it comes to fashion. Thus, a weekly column is born.

Straight off the streets and onto the web, I’ll be bringing you shots of actual Omaha residents in all their fashionable glory. Not only that, you’ll also get some hints as to the “whys” and “how to do it yourselves” of the outfits, thanks to the lovely ladies of the Icon Studio for Hair. Having been open only three years, the four stylists at the Icon boast an impressive 20 years of stylist experience between them, and host an impressive client list. These ladies are a perfect companion to this type of column and are super excited to join in the fun.

Look for the regular “fashionable Omaha” column every Wednesday from now on.
